The hammerhead, weighing in at 950 pounds, was taken to the Biscayne Bay marina.
A tourist from Illinois reeled in the shark as it swam in 50 feet of water.
The shark tends to live in tropical waters. While they are aggressive hunters, they are not known to attack humans unless provoked.
The fisherman said he plans to have his catch mounted.
